Bringing Nature Indoors: How Plants Can Transform Your Home into a Sanctuary

home sanctuary nest and invest

When I first bought my condo in San Marcos last March, it was an ambitious project—an extensive remodel that transformed every corner of the 1989 unit. As the original owner had lived here with lots of deferred maintenance, the place needed a full refresh. I can’t wait to share a post soon with the before and after photos so you can see the journey!

Despite the challenges of the remodel, I was continually inspired by the incredible view of Lake San Marcos, visible from nearly every room. That view brings me such a sense of peace and kept me focused on creating a sanctuary within these walls. We finally moved in April, and now, eight months later, I’m still thoughtfully adding those special touches that make this space feel like home, bringing joy and tranquility each day. It’s been a new experience for me, taking things slow and allowing each piece to settle in naturally—a very un-Libra-like approach, which I credit to the inspiring view.

The Draw of Nature, Inside and Out

Being surrounded by nature—the sunlight, trees, mountains, and lake view—was a key part of what drew me to this place. But I also knew I wanted to bring some of that natural serenity indoors with plants.

I wanted plants not just as decor but as living elements that would contribute to the peace and well-being of my space. My mother’s visit for our birthdays gave me the perfect excuse to go plant shopping, and after a visit to a local nursery, I was excited to infuse my new home with greenery.

Choosing the Right Plants (Especially with Pets in Mind!)

If you’re a pet lover like me, you’ll understand that one of my first questions at the nursery was, “Is this plant safe for dogs?” From there, I was faced with the challenge of choosing plants that would thrive indoors and complement the unique lighting from my many windows. Natural light floods into my condo, which is beautiful, but not every plant thrives in direct sunlight. So, choosing the right spots for each one required a bit of thought.

Tools That Make Plant Care Easy (and Fun!)

It’s been about a month and a half since I welcomed my new plant family, and so far, they’re thriving! My mom gifted me a moisture meter (lifesaver!), which has been especially useful to prevent overwatering—a habit I’ve struggled with in the past. Then, a friend who works in the garden department at Home Depot introduced me to a plant app that’s been a game-changer. Not only does it identify plant species, but it can also diagnose plant health, give care tips, and even provide pet safety info. No more endless trips back to the nursery for answers!

Here's the links to each of these plant care tools: Plant Moisure Meter and Picture This App!

Plants as Part of a Home Sanctuary

Adding plants has been one of the most rewarding touches in making this condo my sanctuary. Their presence has not only added beauty but also brought a sense of joy, calm, and even a boost in well-being. They make each day a bit brighter and remind me of the slower, intentional way I’ve chosen to build this space. So, here’s a glimpse at my green family and a little encouragement to bring plants into your own home, wherever that may be.

Stay tuned for those before-and-after remodel photos! It’s amazing what a bit of vision, patience, and some greenery can do. 🌿
